Smile! Simple Tips for a Healthier Mouth

January 8, 2018 Leave a Comment

You may think that keeping your mouth healthy it easier these days thanks to the advancement of toothbrushes, toothpaste, and other oral hygiene techniques, but there are more threats out there. High quantities of sugar are so prevalent in food and drink nowadays keeping your mouth healthy can be tough. Here are a few of the top ways that you can ensure your mouth stays healthier for longer.

Say Hello to Your Dentist

The first defence against oral health problems should be a regular visit to the dentist. It is estimated that around half of adults don’t go as often as they should. A professional will be able to catch problems such as decay, gum disease or trauma at the earliest stage when they are much easier to treat. They can also provide more cosmetic treatments like teeth whitening. So, if you have not seen your dentist in a while, now is the time to get to know them better!

Cut down on the crap!

As well as high quantities of sugar, fizzy drinks also contain phosphoric acid and citric acid which all contribute towards tooth decay. The more soda you drink, the softer your tooth enamel will become and the more likely it is that you will get cavities. So, drink less soda and more water. You should also be aiming to cut down on all sugary treats. You can combat their damage by rinsing your mouth out with water after consuming any, as well as ensuring you keep up a consistent brushing routine.

Choose Your Toothbrush Wisely

When you are choosing your next toothbrush, you should aim to go for one with soft bristles. Use a proper brushing technique and this should last around two to three months. When you start to notice that the bristles are becoming bent, the time has come to get a replacement. Otherwise, you could be causing unnecessary damage to your teeth and gums.

Practice a Proper Brushing Technique

It is all well and good having the best toothbrush in the world, but if you don’t practice a good brushing technique, it is not going to do you all that much good. You should hold the toothbrush at around a 45-degree angle pointing towards the gum line. Use gentle, short, circular motions. You should be aiming to brush each tooth around 10 to 15 times, but be careful of being overly aggressive as this can end up damaging your teeth and eroding your gum line.

Finish Off By Flossing

Like brushing, there is a right and wrong way of flossing. By flossing the right way your teeth and gums will be a lot healthier. You need around two inches between your fingers to work with, but plenty more than that wrapped around your fingers as you need to use a fresh section for each tooth. Keep the floss tight against the tooth as this will play a big part in breaking up plaque, but don’t be too aggressive to damage your gums.
