Hey everyone, for today’s blog post I wanted to bring you up to date with a big life change that has been going on. If you follow me on social media then you will know that I left my previous job in food back in October. I really enjoyed my last job as I learned so much and made some lifelong friends at it. However, I knew that it was time to move on and challenge myself a. bit more as well as start a new adventure. I handed my notice in back in August of 2021 and had a three-month notice period which meant that my last day was Friday 29th October 2021.
It was definitely something I had thought about for a few weeks before handing my notice in as I wanted to make sure that it was the right decision and my previous job was pretty stable. However, I felt like I was losing my spark which is sometimes a sign that you need to make a change. I am very lucky that I still live with my mum which meant that I was able to leave my job without potentially getting another one straight away. I knew that I did want a bit of a break in between jobs as I had been working for three years straight.
Mum and I decided to book a holiday to Dubai for ten days back in August of 2021. At this point, we weren’t 100% that we would be able to go as travel was still up in the air. I did start applying for jobs from August onwards however, as my leave period was three months long a lot of companies wanted someone to start straight away. For the last few weeks of my job, I worked really hard at putting together handover information for the lady who would be replacing me as well as tieing up anything that needed to be completed before I left. We managed to do a small team leaving dinner and drinks which was really nice and then before I knew it, it was my last day.
My last day was on Friday the 29th of October and then we flew to Dubai on the following Monday for 10 days. It was definitely one of the best decisions we made as we both really needed a break as my Godmother had passed away only a few months earlier. We had such a great time and did some really fun things which I will talk about in my upcoming blog posts.
When we got back from Dubai I started to really apply for jobs and also started studying for my marketing course that I am in the process of undertaking. In the beginning, I was quite picky with what I was applying for as I wanted to make sure that it was the right job. I did have a few first interviews and second interviews before Christmas but nothing was the right fit for either myself or the business I was applying for.
The run-up to Christmas is always a bit of a strange time to change jobs as businesses are often tying up loose ends before the end of the year as many employees take annual leave around this time. I didn’t have anything lined up before Christmas so I took that as a sign to stop and spend time with family and friends during the festive season and start again in the new year.
I had decided that I would see what would happen in January before moving to plan B. I was also being a lot more flexible in terms of salary and job title so that I could apply to jobs that I may not have before Christmas. My plan B was to work in a cafe or shop whilst still applying for a marketing job. I would spend a good 1-2 hours a day looking and applying for jobs. I never spent all day as there aren’t many new ones daily and also it can be really exhausting.
Applying for jobs is a numbers game much like dating. You have to keep going and something will eventually work out. Job hunting can definitely make you feel down and tired especially if you keep getting rejection after rejection. I had a lot more action in January with lots of first interviews and second interviews. Then in the last week of January, I got a job as an Associate Marketing Manager for a big IT company, I start my new job in a few weeks on Valentine’s day. I am really excited to start and get going as I am the type of person who likes to keep busy. When I find out that I got the job I cried as I had really been working hard at finding a job for many weeks.
If you are like me and you are in the process of looking for a new job then don’t give up because the right one is just around the corner. I do believe that everything happens for a reason and what is meant for you is aligning up in the way that it’s supposed to. Also sometimes the job that you liked but didn’t get may not have been the right job for you. Rejection can be hard but it’s also good because it makes you a stronger person and more determined to find the job that feels like the right fit.
